What Can I Do With a Major in... Dance

Professional dancers begin their formal training at a young age and typically work until their late thirties due to the strenuous nature of the work.  A college education is not necessary to be a professional dancer, but because many people have a short career in dance they often study in a completely different field to fall back on when their dance career is over. Some dancers transition to become teachers, choreographers, and directors. This is a very competitive field therefore only the most talented dancers will ever find steady employment. The ability to hear constructive criticism and filter negative criticism will serve the dancer well in his or her profession.  The dancer is continuously learning new things and must face intense competition for job placement. Many dancers find employment with a dance company that travels part of the year; therefore they must be able to be flexible with their schedule.
